“This survey is dedicated to the dreams of all those multi-level marketing people, and to the companies which need to help make their dreams a reality.”
From the dedication
Independent. Unaligned. On the Record.

The questions an entire industry never answered, asked by an outsider with nothing to sell it

Multi level marketing touches millions of lives in over 100 countries, yet as Daniels observes, corporate claims to fame have been subjective and self gratifying by those who are involved, and therefore tainted with bias. Until now, he writes, there has not existed a simple test or international registry to determine whether the company seeking recruits is one of integrity, honour and promise. This survey, conducted by the World Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, was built to close that gap.

Daniels is neither a promoter nor a wrecker. He states plainly that despite the scams, rip offs and frauds, the basic concept in its pure form can be very good, above all for its power to leverage time and effort. He reaches back to Archimedes for the principle:

“Give me a lever long enough, and a fulcrum strong enough, and single-handed I can move the world.”

Then he does what nobody inside the industry could credibly do: he reports what the survey actually found, in thirty three numbered findings that spare no one, and closes with a measuring rod any reader can hold up against any opportunity put in front of them.

Before Everything Else

The two questions the book asks you to answer first

Question One

“Is the product or service offered value for money?”

Question Two

“Would I be an advocate for the product or service if there were no MLM plan attached to the selling of this product or service?”

Two questions, asked honestly, before a single presentation is watched or a single form is signed. The rest of the book gives you the evidence to answer them.

Section Two · Thirty Three Findings

What the survey actually found

1

Very few companies had long term career track or training programs. Daniels contrasts the seriousness of McDonald’s and its University of Hamburgerology with what his survey rarely found, despite financial rewards as large as any international franchise.

2

Ninety five percent of companies have no start to finish work manual. Including the young distributor who privately showed the survey team the manual he had been forced to write himself, for one of the largest organisations in the United States.

3

Few people sponsored were given the full marketing plan or provable income figures.

7

All talk about leadership, but few have even the remotest idea of leadership skills and principles.

8

None had addressed or even shown any concern for the huge fall out rate, which some companies boast is simply part of the business.

20

No group was found with a practical, measurable mission statement.

29

Most groups thrive on hype.

Seven of thirty three. The full findings run from sponsorship and training to tax, manners, principal and agent law, and the difference between looking rich and being permanently rich.

Inside the book

The Centre

Profile of the World Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies

The organisation behind the survey: assisting businesses, governments and institutions worldwide since 1984, built without loans, overdrafts or outside capital, and travelling to the location of the need rather than waiting behind fixed walls.

Section One

Preface

The whole vocabulary of the industry laid out honestly, from network marketing to party plans, and the blunt public verdict it attracts. Then the history: Avon’s rise from 10,000 representatives selling 117 products, Carl Rehnborg’s California Vitamin Corporation, why the model grows so fast, the Archimedes leverage principle, and the two personal test questions above.

Section Two

Survey Results

Thirty three numbered findings drawn from meetings, conventions and individual counselling sessions across the industry worldwide, each one explained with the stories and evidence behind it. Includes the census comparison exercise any reader can run on their own group in an afternoon.

Section Three

Our Predictions For The Future

Where the industry is heading: network brokerage, bunch marketing co operatives, caretaker managers for high pin groups, display showrooms, and the warning that unless long standing methods change, legislation may eventually strangle the whole industry.

The Measuring Rod

The Pillars of Excellence

The book’s closing checklist of what indicates stability and equity in a MLM business: integrity, mission statement, quality product or services, value, plan, training, international business options, dispute resolution, and inheritable structure, ending with the question every builder should face: is it really your business, or are you building for another?

About the Author

Peter J. Daniels

Coming from a poor dysfunctional family background and suffering from ill health and dyslexia, Peter Daniels never passed one grade at school, yet went on to author books and programs spanning the world in several languages, endorsed by personal friends including Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, W. Clement Stone, Dr. Robert Schuller, Paul J. Meyer, Richard Devos, and Dr. John Haggai.

His standing on this subject is unusual: since his first stage appearance at a MLM convention in 1988 he has been a speaker of choice at conventions attended by tens of thousands, keynoted the 1993 World Congress of the Direct Selling Association in Kuala Lumpur, and served as advisor on the board of two prominent MLM companies, while remaining unaligned with any particular company and accepting no royalty on the recorded lectures sold in their thousands. This survey, first published in 1992 with his son Graham, has become a reference throughout the world for those contemplating a vocation in multi level marketing.

Questions

Before you begin

The complete book as a PDF, delivered to you immediately after checkout and kept in your member library on this site so you can download it again whenever you wish. It is the full 100 page text: the Centre profile, the preface, all thirty three survey findings, the future predictions, and the Pillars of Excellence.

The words are identical. The digital edition is the same complete book in PDF for immediate reading; the paperback is the printed World Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies edition, sold and shipped by Amazon. Many readers keep both: one for tonight, one for the shelf.

Neither, and that is its value. Daniels writes that despite the scams and frauds the industry has attracted, the basic concept in its pure form can be very good, and then reports thirty three findings that pull no punches. He has spoken at the industry’s largest conventions yet remains unaligned with any company and takes no royalty on his recorded lectures, so the assessment stands on evidence rather than interest.

Anyone considering joining a network, anyone already building one, and anyone advising someone who is. The two test questions, the census comparison exercise, and the Pillars of Excellence give each of those readers a practical way to weigh any opportunity put in front of them before signing anything.

The survey was first published in 1992 and, in the book’s own words, has become a reference throughout the world for those contemplating a vocation in multi level marketing. This edition carries the subtitle new challenges in the 21st century, and its findings, tests and measuring rod are written to be applied to any network in any era.
