The field manual for the worst season of your life

The creditors are closing in. The business is on the skids. The money has run out. Now what, exactly, do you do on Monday morning?

How to Handle a Major Crisis

when your back is to the wall

Peter J. Daniels sat through three creditors' meetings of his own before he wrote this book. What came out of that fire is fifteen concrete tactics for the person under siege, not comfort, not theory, but the moves that keep the ship afloat and turn the fight around.

From the preface

It usually starts with a phone call

“You don't know me, but...” and then the whole sad, sorry story spills out. Peter J. Daniels, the opening line of the preface

For decades those calls found their way to Daniels: emotional, often angry, usually cries for help in a seemingly hopeless situation. He took them seriously for one reason. He had made that call himself, in everything but name, through three business failures, repossession notices on everything he owned, and weeks when he and Robina searched behind the lounge chairs for coins to buy food.

This book is his written answer to every one of those calls, aimed squarely at the major financial crisis, and, as he notes in the preface, built on principles that hold in the other storms of life as well.

Tactic one comes before any phone call or document

Take control of the one thing already in your hands

The cold feeling deep in the stomach, the panic, the guilt: Daniels names the reactions because he felt them all. Then he points to the single controllable in every calamity:

Your attitude is more relevant than facts, more versatile than circumstances, more powerful than opposition, more resilient than pressure and more flexible than time. It is more valuable than money or influence and far more forceful than markets.

The crisis playbook

Fifteen tactics for when your back is to the wall

1

Remove the Imagery

Take control at inception and stay captain of the ship.

2

Role Playing and Past Victories

Accept yourself as a full person with flaws that can be dealt with, then draw on every fight you have already won.

3

Put the Threat into Perspective

A crisis feels final. Thankfully, it is not.

4

Plan a Countdown

Progress in life runs in direct proportion to the crisis, the response, and the lessons taken from it.

5

Extend the Deadline

Written by a man who once searched behind the lounge chairs for coins. Time can be bought.

6

Divide and Conquer

There are pieces of your crisis you can split from the whole and solve in part.

7

Work on a Back Up Plan

Think about the future while the brain is working and the emotional forces are flat out.

8

Phone Six People

You will not feel so alone, and you will find the companionship of those who have gone before.

9

The Kettle Only Boils When There Is Water in It

What to do with the dragging time a crisis forces on you.

10

Do Not Be Side Tracked into Foolish Decisions

The side track leads into a deeper crisis that takes even longer to escape.

11

Do Not Be Pressured into Unwise Moves

The counter document you are obligated to sign, or else, and how to face it.

12

Go on the Attack

Work at your crisis continually. Attack the problems before they attack you.

13

Keep Using Your Time

Delays and timeframes are precious jewels. Use them to protect and propel you.

14

Prime the Pump

You cannot pump water without priming the pump. Keep a reserve, even if it is only one unique idea.

15

Where Did You Go Wrong?

Become your own teacher and student, and grade yourself honestly.

“Attack the problems. Don't let them attack you.”
Peter J. Daniels, from chapter twelve

The book opens with a poem for the morning after

Time to Dream

It seems it's time to dream again,
Dream wide and very high.
It seems it's time to dream again,
To be great before I die.

It seems it's time to dream again,
And build my life anew.
It seems it's time to dream again,
Yes, it's time for me and you.

The complete poem opens the book, written by Daniels for everyone starting again from the wall.

The sixteenth chapter looks past the crisis

Bonus: The Twelve Principles of Success

Because surviving is not the goal. Rebuilding is.

The book closes with Daniels' twelve principles for the life after the storm, each one explained in his own words, beginning with:

  • Adopt a right attitude, the mind set that takes precedence over every other principle
  • Have a willingness to bear pain, his one sentence answer when asked for the secret of achievement
  • Take control, because organising your life so you are no burden to others is the most unselfish act there is

Nine more follow, from money sense to attention to detail, closing with his blessing: may God expand your life until your destiny is fulfilled.

About the author

  • Survived and repaid three business failures before building an international enterprise
  • Adviser and director across national and multinational boards
  • Author of the Peter J. Daniels Collection of success classics
  • Decades of counsel to leaders and businesses in crisis worldwide

Its aim, stated in the preface, is the major financial crisis: creditors, collapse, the wall. But Daniels adds that the principles hold in the other storms of life as well, and readers facing any siege, legal, professional, personal, will recognise their situation in these tactics.
It was built for exactly that reader. The chapters are short, concrete and ordered: take control of your attitude tonight, put the threat in perspective, buy time on the deadline, split the problem, phone six people, refuse the pressured signature. It is a manual to act from, not a book to admire.

It seems it's time to dream again
